Bringing home a new baby is such a sweet, exhausting, exciting season. The days can feel like a blur of feeding, naps, diaper changes, and newborn snuggles—and somehow, those tiny details change almost overnight.

That’s one of the reasons I love in-home newborn photography in St. Louis. Instead of packing up your brand-new baby and heading to a studio, I come to you. We can slow down, take our time, and capture your family exactly as you are during those first few weeks together.

St. Louis Newborn Photography

If you’re wondering what an in-home lifestyle newborn session actually looks like, here’s what you can expect.

What Is In-Home Lifestyle Newborn Photography?

Lifestyle newborn photography is focused on your family, your baby, and the connection between you.

Rather than using elaborate props or complicated newborn poses, I photograph your family naturally throughout your home. We’ll capture the tiny details of your new baby, but also the bigger moments—snuggling together on the couch, reading in the nursery, siblings meeting their new brother or sister, and all the little interactions that make this season yours.

My goal is for your photos to feel clean, bright, joyful, and timeless while still looking and feeling like your family.

When Should We Schedule Newborn Photos?

I typically recommend scheduling your newborn session during the first three weeks after baby arrives.

There isn't a magic day when your baby has to be photographed, though. Some babies are sleepy and cuddly right away, while others are more alert and curious.

The most important thing is that we don't rush the experience.

If baby needs to eat, we stop and feed. If baby needs a diaper change, we take a break. If your toddler needs a snack or some time to warm up, that's completely fine too.

Your baby gets to set the pace.

What Happens During an In-Home Newborn Session?

When I arrive, we'll take a few minutes to get settled and see how everyone is doing. I'll look around your home for the best natural light and we'll typically use a few different areas throughout the house.

We might photograph:

  • Baby snuggled with Mom and Dad
  • The whole family together
  • Siblings with their new baby
  • Mom and baby
  • Dad and baby
  • Baby individually
  • Tiny details like fingers, toes, eyelashes, and sleepy stretches
  • Baby in the nursery
  • Everyday moments around your home

I’ll give you guidance throughout the session so you aren't left wondering what to do with your hands or where to stand. But I also want plenty of moments where you simply interact with your baby.

The result is a gallery that feels like your family—not a Pinterest-perfect version of someone else's.

What If My Baby Is Awake?

That's completely okay!

Your baby does not have to sleep through the entire session.

Some of my favorite newborn images are of babies looking around, stretching, making funny faces, or quietly taking everything in. Lifestyle newborn photography gives us the flexibility to capture those moments, too.

And if baby needs a little help settling down, we'll take a break.

There is no need to stress about getting your baby to “cooperate.”

What About Siblings?

This is one of my favorite parts of newborn sessions.

If you have older children, we'll make sure they have plenty of time in front of the camera—but we won't expect them to sit perfectly still for an hour.

I'll capture the sweet moments between siblings, including cuddles, kisses, curious little looks, and even some of the silly personalities that make your kids who they are.

Sometimes toddlers need breaks. Sometimes they want to run around. Sometimes they surprise us and completely nail the photos.

All of it is normal.

And honestly, some of those imperfect moments end up being the ones you love most.

Do We Need a Spotless House?

Absolutely not.

You just brought a human into the world. 😂

Your home does not need to look like a magazine before I arrive.

I'll look for the areas with the best light and clean backgrounds, and we can move a few things around if needed. Most sessions naturally happen in spaces like the master bedroom, nursery, living room, or wherever your family spends the most time.

You don't need to deep clean your entire house before your newborn session.

What Should We Wear?

For lifestyle newborn photos, I recommend clothing that feels comfortable and coordinates without being overly matchy-matchy.

Soft neutrals, creams, whites, light blues, tans, and other muted colors photograph beautifully and keep the focus on your family.

You don't need to dress your entire family in white, though. The most important thing is that everyone feels comfortable.

I'll also help guide you on what will photograph well before your session.

Ready to Capture Those First Few Weeks?

Your baby won't always be this tiny.

The sleepy stretches, tiny fingers, newborn snuggles, and even the beautiful chaos of those first few weeks are part of your family's story.

And while this season can feel long when you're in the middle of it, it really does go by quickly.

If you're expecting a baby in the St. Louis area, I'd love to come to your home and capture this sweet season for you.
