When Should You Book a Newborn Photographer? A Guide from a St. Louis Newborn Photographer
Finding out you’re expecting a baby is such an exciting time—and suddenly, there are about a million things to think about. The nursery, the car seat, the tiny clothes, the hospital bag… and somewhere in the middle of all of that, you may be wondering:
When should I book a newborn photographer?
If you’re looking for a newborn photographer in O’Fallon, MO, the good news is that you don’t have to have everything figured out right away. But booking your photographer early can help make sure you have a spot reserved around your due date.
Here’s what to know when planning your newborn photography session.
When Should You Book a Newborn Photographer?
I recommend reaching out to your newborn photographer during your second or early third trimester, ideally around 28–34 weeks of pregnancy.
You don’t necessarily need to know your baby’s exact birth date. Your photographer can reserve a spot based on your expected due date and adjust the session date once your baby arrives.
Booking early is especially helpful if you have a specific photographer or style in mind. Newborn photographers often have a limited number of sessions they take each month, so popular dates can fill quickly.
If you’re already past 34 weeks, though, don’t worry! It’s always worth reaching out to see if your photographer has availability.
When Should Newborn Photos Be Taken?
Traditionally, newborn photography sessions are scheduled during the first couple of weeks after birth.
Many photographers recommend somewhere around 5–14 days old, when babies tend to spend a lot of time sleeping and naturally curl up into those sweet newborn positions.
But there isn't a magic deadline for newborn photos.
Every baby is different, and some families prefer photos when their baby is a little older and more alert. Lifestyle newborn photography can be especially flexible because the focus is less on posing and more on capturing your family naturally.
Whether your baby is a few days old or a few weeks old, beautiful newborn photographs are still possible.
Do Newborn Photos Have to Be Taken Within the First Two Weeks?
Not at all.
While the first two weeks are popular for traditional posed newborn photography, there is no “wrong” age for newborn photos.
A slightly older baby may be more awake and interested in what's happening around them. You may get more eye contact, stretches, little expressions, and interactions with Mom and Dad.
For families who want a relaxed, natural experience, lifestyle newborn photography can work beautifully beyond the traditional newborn stage.
Instead of worrying about whether your baby is “perfect” for photos, I want you to remember this:
Your baby is only this little once.
The tiny details, sleepy cuddles, little fingers, newborn stretches, and the way they fit perfectly into your arms are worth remembering.
What Is Lifestyle Newborn Photography?
If the thought of putting your brand-new baby into complicated poses makes you nervous, lifestyle newborn photography may be a great option for you.
Lifestyle newborn photography focuses on your family interacting naturally rather than creating perfectly posed images.
Sessions can include:
- Snuggling together
- Feeding your baby
- Rocking your baby
- Parents cuddling their newborn
- Sibling interactions
- Tiny details like fingers, toes, eyelashes, and baby hair
- Laughing, playing, and simply being together
The goal is to document what this season of life actually feels like.
You don't need to know how to pose, and your baby doesn't need to cooperate perfectly. We'll follow their lead and capture the little moments that happen naturally.
What Should You Wear for Newborn Photos?
When choosing outfits for your newborn photography session, think comfortable, neutral, and timeless.
Soft colors, simple textures, and coordinating—not perfectly matching—outfits tend to photograph beautifully.
For newborn sessions, I generally recommend avoiding large logos, busy patterns, and clothing that you're constantly adjusting.
And don't feel like you need to buy an entirely new wardrobe for your session. The most important thing is that you feel comfortable and like yourself.
What If We Have Older Children?
Don't worry!
If your new baby has an older brother or sister, we'll make room for those relationships in your session, too.
Older siblings don't have to sit perfectly still or smile at the camera the entire time. Some of the sweetest images can come from the moments when they're simply interacting with their new sibling.
We'll keep things relaxed and age-appropriate and give everyone plenty of breaks when needed.
Before your session, it's helpful to have a few basic things ready:
Extra diapers
Baby wipes
A pacifier if your baby uses one
A bottle if you're bottle feeding
Extra clothes for baby
Anything sentimental you'd like photographed
Most importantly, come ready to slow down and enjoy your baby.
